This photograph was taken April 9 th 1981. The Opening Day starter at Dodger Stadium was a relatively unknown pitcher who had pitched fewer than 18 innings in the Major Leagues. Fernando Valenzuela pitched a complete game shut out to the Houston Astros that afternoon, giving up only 5 hits and 2 walks, and started what would forever be known as Fernandomania. In the first 8 games of the 1981 season, Fernando would pitch 8 complete games, strike out 68 batters and have 0.50 ERA. He became a lynch pin in the order and helped The Dodgers win the World Series. Here Fernando Valenzuela is pictured with catcher Mike Scioscia, celebrating that famous Opening day outing.
Over his illustrious career Fernando Valenzuela would pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers for a decade, win 2 World Series, make 6 All Star Game appearances, and win the 1981 National League Cy Young and Rookie of the Year.
Catcher Mike Scioscia would spend all 12 years of his professional career as a Dodger, win two World Series as a player, lead The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a coach to their only World Series victory to date in 2002 and twice win American League Manager of the Year.
